Hi Jeremy,
This post made me laugh. I nearly did the same thing with my Chinese ash and Pomegranate. Neither looked like they'd made it through the winter and I was not too optimisic about the ash, seens as it lost its leaves due to a insect infestation in late September.
Two days after I repotted the ash, a tiny leaf appeared. Now its doing fine. Patience is a virtue, and definately the biggest attribute to have in bonsai.
