As to figs or any tree thickening requires growth. Growth is helped by leaves, the amount of chlorphyl. These are the energy cells of any tree. The more you have the faster the growth and the thicker the tree. Larger pots, more light, more humidity, more fertilizer also are helpful.
In Whitefish, I grow lots of tropicals indoors and juniper, larch, maple, cedar, fir, limer and ponderosa pin outdoors.
