I agree with your comments about the material appearing so young. Of course, a bold design created early in the life of a bonsai can become something great in time. I think that is where this bonsai is headed. Granted, the trunks aren't truly in a congruent shape, but with some filling in of foliage and appropriate tweaking, this should be less of a sticking point.
David's suggestion of two individual trees is a very straightforward and sensible approach. I still think in the spirit of the thread, the initial idea can be kept and greatly improved. Another great problem to have.
