Silver Cypress dying from overwatering

I bought my girlfriend a 10 year old silver cypress for valentines day, it was a healthy tree, untill a couple weeks ago, the moss strted to die, so it did not retain water and it "felt dry" so she was watering it at least 2 times a day... in the winter, and teh sun is out now and its getting nice, and the needles are turning pale and very fragile. I think it has root rot, I was wondering how to revive it. I havn't watered it for about 3 days and the soil is still damp, Should I replant it possible, I have had no experience with root rot and wouldn tnow the first thing on how to nurture it back to health. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Khody
