How to display pictures in the Journal

I had a great question today from Joanie about how to display pictures in the Journal.

You can't attach photos to journal posts but you can display them. Previously this was done with image tags. The downside with that is it made some huge pictures that made the journals really slow to load.

So I came up with another idea. A simple way to create some clickable thumbnail pictures that are quick to load and can be positioned wherever you want. All you do is upload your Journal pictures somewhere - for now let's say in the Test Area 51 under a title called "TreeBay's Journal Pics" or something. Except you might want to use your own name

You would need to upload to another section of the forum. Use the Test forum (area 51) if you want.

HOW TO DO IT
  1. First, Start a thread in there labeled "TreeBay's Journal Pics" or something like that.
  2. Then you can upload your photos there. Use a new post in the same thread anytime you add a journal entry. Don't delete the photos though, because that's where they're stored!
  3. Then take note of the image numbers. Each attachment has a number associated with it that you can see just beneath, right under that pencil gizmo.
  4. You want the numbers after the # sign, leave off the # sign: so #21769 becomes 21769
  5. Now when you create your journal - or edit an existing entry just insert the following tag where you want the picture to appear:
    [ thumb=left]21769[/thumb]
EXCEPT LEAVE THE SPACE BETWEEN the [ and the thumb out!

You replace the 21769 with the image number of your attachment. You can use left, right, center for the thumb= part to position it, left right or center!

Let me know how it goes, but for now if you want to test it, just insert exactly this in a test Journal Entry:

[ thumb=left]21814[/thumb]
[ thumb=right]21769[/thumb]
[ thumb=center]21771[/thumb]

Will turn into something that looks like this

The only downside is you have to be logged in to see the images - same with all the forum photos.

P.S. As you can see, this works in the forum too. Of course you can simply attach posts in the forum in the normal way, But if you want to show the picture inline an article, this could be handy too.

Regards,

Matt
