My birthday is coming up and my dear wife wants to get me a real turntable, so that I can stop using the tiny shohin turntable that I hacked together out of an old spice rack.

Sounds like a great idea to me! ;-)

Anyway, I was wondering how I go about picking one out. What features am I looking for? A brake? And should this brake default to "on", or default to "off"? (There's a phrase for that, but I forget what it is.) Any particular brands to seek out or avoid?
