Always keep them covered!!! They're sneaky little rascals. 
Even a moat won't keep them out.
Pootsie, the last pic is for you. I have three cats that patrol my back yard, and the worst things they do are sleep in the bigger pots and occasionally break off a twig rubbing up on the bonsai. One is sixteen (almost seventeen) years old and deaf as a post!!!
