hi ya,
i have just bought an ulmus parvifolia too (chinese elm), mines only 6yrs old (aarrrr). anyways,

unfortunately i dont think they go very well in other styles, however i totally ignored this and have began changing its shape, pruning it like hell, and have even attempted a graft.
If it looks good as it is in that style, then leave it and just keep it refined
If you feel creative then do what i've done
