Another note on collecting:

When I collect most trees I tend to save the upper ground cover that is growing around the tree. I lift the root ball and try to save all the grass and other plants that are growing on it.

I find that most trees, especially those growing in the wild have a symbiotic relationship with these plants. At the very least they create a mirco-environment that the tree is used to and which will help the tree recover.

When I re-pot the tree after time, I then remove these plants when I remove the original soil.

I also save as much as the original soil on the root ball as possible and just pack bonsai soil around it when putting in into a training box.
