Thumbs down Ficus Problem

I know some one who has these two Ficus tree's {not sure what kind of Ficus}. One of them has glued rock over the top layer of soil. They both are in potting soil. Recently they both started losing leaves and some of there twigs. They don't get alot of sun, but there soil mosture level is okay. Now they are getting slight new growth. I am wondering if this is normal or if it isn't, then is it because of the lack of sun light, potting soil or {on the one tree} the glued rocks? Any advice. Thanks Elm237
