Nursery stock rootball packed with clay
I purchased a jap. maple at the end of last season and stuck it in the ground. Well, I'm going to dig it up this weekend and I am ready to go with a training pot, soil, etc. However there's a problem . . . . the rootball was surrounded by clay. Apparently it helps in moisture retention or something while at the nursery. Anyway, is there an easy way to get rid of the clay without damaging the roots? What do I do here?
