creating foliage pads on Black Pine

I am presenting two pictures of a standard J-Black pine pad.
The goal of my experiment was to create the smallest candles possible on a
J-Black pine. I have controled the candle size by pinching (standard technique) and by needle pruning (additional technique). Last winter when the needles reached two inches I cut all needle bundles to just under one inch. This is represented in the first picture. The second picture shows the drastic needle pruning that is done just as the needles start to push out of there sheaths. I have found that the pine will push single needle buds out of about 15% of the sheaths left on each small stem.

By using this technique over about five years on this tree, I think that I have the smallest needles possible on a Black Pine.
