Here's a close up of one of the jack-pines we saw out where a local ranger told us that they were burning next year. In order for Jack-pine cones to open up and disperse their seeds, they must be exposed to the extreme heat of a fire.
They clearcut these areas and burn them so new stands of Jack-pines will start. Jack-pines are the habitat of the Kirkland Warbler.
1) Nice thick, tapered lichen covered trunk.
2) Live branches
3) Some foliage doubling back
4) Growing in a old well rotted pine stump, I could almost lift this out by hand.
