My other recent bonsai aquisition very nice Fukien tea that seems to be doing pretty well in its new environment (though a friend who obtained a similar tree on the same day reports inches of new growth, over which I am rather jealous
). My tea appears to be a graft of some sort, rather than a grown tree, but it has potential and I hope to fill it out and make it look good. I'm an extreme newbie at this, but I'm very excited by the potential for style.
Anyway, my questions are these:
Firstly, since I got this tree it has produced a few new leaves. These new leaves are huge (an inch long in some cases). What determines leaf size? Is there any way to reduce the leaf size to something resembling what I see in pictures of more "professional" trees?
And secondly, I understand that it is possible to create a nice canopy of branches to cover the top of the tree and make it look full and tree-ish. What kind of training would I use to create this kind of canopy? Are wires necessary or will pruning be enough? If the former, are there specific kinds of wire I should use? If so, why? If it is the latter, what kind of pruning?
I know these are a lot of questions and I appriciate any responses you can give. Thanks a bunch.
