Speaking from my limited experience...
I have a number of tropicals that are growing next to south windows on which I removed the screens in the fall to increase overall light.
My tropicals growth slowed during December but are now growing again like crazy. I use no artificial lights at all and have fed regularly throughout the winter with inorganic fertilizer and switched to organic at the beginning of this month.
Both windows that I use are facing south and I keep the plants about 4 inches from the glass. They typically need watering on a daily basis, sometimes every other day when the temps drop. I have noticed no adverse affects although I have no doubt that artificial lighting would increase the rate of growth somewhat.
