How can I bend thick trunks?

I have purchesed a new tree. Sadly it has a straight trunk (about 10" long) after some nice bends. I have received suggestions on my sweidish bonsai site, that the trunk is unbendeble and that I should cut it at the beginning of the straight part and start over with a new top. Have anyone of managed to bend a 1.5 inch thick trunk on ficus retusa? (or other trees with leaves for that matter)
