That should work fine but don't forget to shelter from the wind. Some kind of barrier would be prefferable. Could you post a picture or describe the foliege? Hinoki Cypress and its many cultivars are all False Cypress. Then there are trees like Boulevard Cypress, Sawara Cypress and all like cultivars. This last group have needle like foliege and winter burn quite badly so they need protection from the wind. I have found that throwing straw on top of them works quite well or even a burlap wind break.
