I jut bought today a dying young Japanese Maple for $3. it is not yet a bonsai but I am hoping to train it as such

Trunk diameter 1/2 cm (not INCH)
high about 10-12 cm

all leaves seems to be eaten by some kind of pests but I can't see any on the leaves. it has some buds..

Questions Specific to my problem
1) Should I trim all current leaves in order for new to appear?
2) Should I move it to ground now or after it recovers?

General Acer Palmatum questions
1) do they like acid soil like Azalea
2) will MirAcid be a good fertilizer for them?
