Matt is right about the shape of the pot affecting the drainage [something to do with the height and weight of the water column]. For regular nursery pots try a half and half mix of good potting soil and oil dry. The oil dry is cheap and bulky and will last several years before breaking down. The shallower the pot, like the wooden growing boxes, the closer to real bonsai soil that you'll need to use.
