For instance the chinese elm is 50.3k and 450x339, so it could be up to 50% larger file size and almost 300% bigger image size (assuming you can compress adequately). Plus it's a poor crop.

I have tried several things to make the pictures a bit larger but every time I do the forum rejects them. Guess you are stuck with this size.
As to the crop, well, like I said before I am no photographer.
