You make perfect sense. Your sterile mix is great for seed starting. I would not do a preventive fungicide drench. Wait until the first signs of trouble. I have started zillions of seeds in 100% verrmic and have little damping-off.
I don't fertilize at all until the seedlings are up and hardened off,say about June-July and then only very lightly.
