John Thompson is an avid oak enthusiast here in San Jose. *He and another collector tried ground-layering oak as a means of collecting, but found that the trees' bark was growing across the layering girdle, essentially healing over.

Later, they began adding a few wraps of wire under the upper wound, which is supposed to help with this. *You will probably need some type of physical barrier to make this successful, and I would expect it would take closer to 18 months.
