Fungus problem

Well, I don't know wether it is a problem or a feature. I don't know much about trees, so here my question goes...

One of my favorite trees has some fungus over it, it is a grey/green fungus, as the one that grows over the pines in the forest, so I don't know what to do, should I fight it (how?) or should I leave it there?, it obviously makes the tree look older, but I'm affraid that it might stop it's development... well, I would like to send you a pic, but because of the res. of my cam, I can't...

Then, on the soil of other pot, it's growing some green fungus, I know it is because it has too much water and sunlight, but the tree demands it... does it is appreciated or should I fight it? (how?)
