Would you please answer two questions for me?

I am unfamiliar with these products because I haven't been able to locate any, but what's the difference between pumice and lava? I thought pumice was derived from lava rocks. You know, Lava with pumice. Would you mind expounding on these products?

Secondly, you mention "sifted & layered". I'm doing the sifting part, what's this about the layered part?

I'm currently using Turface, Ralph's Designer Dirt (which I believe is improved expanded shale), and sifted bark. However, I'm simply mixing these together and then adding a top dressing (on top of course).
