I have to disagree with you there. If the author of that work wants credit, he has the RIGHT to receive it. The fact that it appeared on a public forum doesn't discount that right.

As to originality of the statement, or protection of someone, the quote could have been paraphrased, but it was taken verbatim. Apparently it was significant, or it would not have justified a substantial response.
So if the author wants credit for it, he has the legal and ethical right to have it, whether you, I, or anyone else thinks it's a good idea.
