Treebeard

This summer I have been out and about taking photos of inspirational trees in my local area, and I came across this a few months ago.

You can just imagine a pair of lovestruck teenagers were walking hand in hand in the woods, and the boy decided to carve a love-heart in the trunk of a tree to show the girl how much in love he is. This boy decides that he is not just going to carve the outline of a heart, he's going to carve away all the bark right down to the heartwood. Many years later the tree has rotted away from the inside, which coupled with some vigorous callus growth leaves what we see today.

Or just a random act of nature... take your pick.
