Most of the true elms are of Chinese decent. Zelcova can be made into bonsai, but under perfect conditions, the tree grows so fast that the shape can get away very fast if not diligent about pruning and pinching. I say pinching but usually pruning. The wood grows very fast. They can be treated the same as Chinese elm, but don't expect the same results.
You will hear other opinions and you will probably see some links to some exceptional specimens. Like the Hokkaido elm, another Japanese elm, they are far and few between.
Zelcovas make wonderfull forest projects, as they tend to be fairly straight growers. Work best as formal upright projects.
