Ok. I would water the layer and keep an eye on it. When I do air layers, I usually thin out the part that's getting layered a bit. My reasoning being that there aren't any roots to support all the foliage on it. The layer usually comes back with lots of new leaves in couple of months. Maybe your layer is doing this thinning on its own. I would have hope as long as there are some green parts left on the layer.
