I haven't done a Chinese elm in a while either.
To throw my two cents in though .............I've just seen so many of these that need rootwork. Here's a question.
Rather than bother with root work. I know wrong time of the year, recent transplant, and taking into consideration that many folks are probably new at this............
What would be wrong with just tying off these big roots with wire?
By wrapping wire around the offending root, much like you would a tournequet? Within a year or two the wire would cut off the roots nourishment little by little until it (the root) essentially dies or can easily be cut off without really cutting much of any usefull roots off.
