You'll be more likely to get useful responses if you
(1) Focus your camera
(2) Don't start a new thread for each post.
I don't really work with Chinese Elm, so my advice is not worth so much....but my feeling is that this is not the time of year to be doing root work, especially on a tree that has just gone through the mail.
Place it in a pot and fill the soil in around the tree, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. Next spring, you can work on the roots.
