AGE = 37 as of next week
NATIONALITY = U.S.
YEARS INTO BONSAI = 15 or so
BONSAI EDUCATION = 1 year beginner intro with a very good Japanese-American teacher followed by a weekly workshop with a bonsai professional for several years. Lots of books read.
HOW I GOT STARTED = Received a mallsai as a gift that beat the odds and didn't die.
CLUBS & ORGANISATIONS = GSBF (California), Midori Bonsai Club (San Jose), Bay Area Bonsai Associates (Oakland)
ONLINE HAUNTS = bonsaiTALK, occasionally on IBC gallery, thrown off G@rdenWeb once.
***BONSAI COLLECTION***
TREES (total) = about 60 in pots
ACTUAL BONSAI = fewer every year as standards increase
POTENTSAI (future bonsai) = oops too many
DISPLAY STANDS = about a dozen
SCROLLS = 3 or so
ACCENT PLANTS = do weeds count?
THE IDEAL SIZE COLLECTION IS: about half what I have at any given time
***FAVOURITES***
SPECIES (NAME 3) = Japanese Maple, White Pine, plus anything with flowers for my wife
IDEAL TREE SIZE = about 12-20 inches, small enough to carry around but big enough to make an impression
STYLE (NAME 3) = informal upright, informal upright and info....
DISLIKES = I never got much into tropicals
BONSAI PHILOSOPHY = Teaching bonsai is almost as much fun as doing it yourself. You have to think on your feet and really understand both the trees and the thought process. It's a great way to learn!
BIGGEST CHALLENGE = Keeping my collection in managable limits.
