Hawthorn Back Budding

I have an old hawthorn that is styled in a slanting/windswept style. It was collected in 81, I purchased it this spring. Sorry for the run around, but its and old tree that I havn't had long, and it has been growing really well since I got it. But I screwed up and managed to kill the top branch while pulling it down to the correct angle. The top is jinned, and this was the only living branch for +-4". I was hoping if someone with more experiance could guess if this guy will back bud or die back to the next branch? Should I cut it back hard and hope for a sprout, dump alot of nitrogen on it, or just leave it alone and keep my fingers crossed.
