After one year in Florida, we would repot the tree into a training pot and remove all of the pearlite (if that is your rooting medium). If we are planning on styling it, we would start at this time. Sorry, I couldn't tell you if you can do this up North or not. Just to be on the safe side you should wait until spring to start.

Do you have a photo of the cutting? Thick is a relative term.
