Sure you can do this. The weave is a little coarser than ideal, but it works great for all but possibly your shohin soils and top dressings.
If you go this route, be sure to use the aluminum mesh and not the nylon kind. The nylon window screen is very weak and tends to rip. If you have the aluminum kind you can wrap a wooden box frame and then just staple gun it in place. If you go larger than 12x12 you'll probably need support - then you can use a wireframe over-the-door of the type they hang pots and pans from. I'll see if I can find a picture later.
