Expanded Shale Question

Still have not found a source for Turface here in the DFW area. The turface.com site says that their home consumer products are sold by Shultz as a soil improver. The stores here carry some Shultz products but not that one.

I ran across this expanded shale at a local nursery. They sell it in ordinary 5 gallon plastic nursery containers for $2.50. It looks like small dark brown/dark gray rocks, lightweight. Size varies from about .1 inch to .4 inch, with the majority averaging around .3 inch. A little large I would think but maybe could be used as part of a mix. The kid at the nursery said it is "popped" like popcorn and absorbs and holds water.

Does anyone have opinions on this?

Thank you, lm
