We should clarify this.
You can chop a swamp or bald cypress and perhaps also a pond cypress; I don't know about the latter. These
Taxodium species are deciduous and not true cypresses (or even true false cypresses

).
Don't chop a true cypress
Cupressus sempervirens (which, from its name, clearly is not deciduous) or a false cypress
Chamaecyparis with the sort of abandon you would use on a maple or other deciduous tree.
