Yes, it looks like serious wind- or sun- burn.

I'm not sure where you are Numbaten, but Carcey- I am also in Dallas and my tiny maples have suffered since I moved here late winter. Be careful about the amount of sun they receive and by all means, protect them from the drying winds we have here.

The burn is mostly cosmetic (unless it is allowed to continue to happen) and the leaves should come back as normal next spring.

As a matter of fact, after my maples acclimated to the Dallas climate and started showing these signs I moved them to a better spot and the newest growth is doing just fine. Of course, it is only June. I'm a bit concerned about July and August! It gets mighty hot here, doesn't it? UGH.
