There are two ways to prevent too large of leaves during an exhibit:
1. defoliate the tree and display it bare of leaves. This would require very tight ramification.
2. defoliate the tree a couple of weeks before the exhibit so that the new foliage has not completely matured causing them to be much smaller.

The final height of the tree will be more or less the height that you see right now. I believe that is about 4 to 5 inches.

So, you live with the large leaves the rest of the time.

With our main show in early April, it's too early to do a complete defoliation, even with a greenhouse. I may try an extensive partial defoliation, lke I did this March to get the same result. (Once the new leaves are coming in, I can then remove rest of the large old leaves safely

Jim VanLandingham went through a shohin craze during the past two years and took hundreds of shohin cuttings. Now, he is trying to downsize his collection, so he has given me many of his potensai.

Ask him please NOT to give them all away now! I'll be there in 6 weeks!

BTW, looks like I can't be there, Wed. July 28th. It will have to be Mon, Tues, or Thursday.
