Carl,
Common sense says that the climate in southern New Jersey is much different from the Florida climate. If you defoliated a ficus right now in Florida it would be a stress to the tree because the temperatures are getting very high and growth is about to stop. I am guessing that defoliating your forest now is much like defoliating a ficus down south in late February (which is when most of the defoliation is done).
