You can almost always pot up to a larger container without disturbing the roots much.

Keep in mind though that the soil surrounding the root ball will drain much better, so you may have some difficulty watering and you'll need to be sure that you completely saturate the root ball.

An alternative is to do a partial repot by cutting out blocks of soil/root from the four corners of the pot and then replacing with fresh soil. That should help with the drainage problem and maybe less disruptive to the tree in general.
