Larry, Bending the rules is what separates the boys from the men.
Bending the rules also takes many years of dedication to bonsai techniques and artistic talent. Just bending the tree over the pot for "bending the rules sake" does not a good bonsai make.
The photo of the ash looks like a photo of a seedling that has not been watered for a few days. It looks dead! There is nothing artistic nor bonsai about this plant. This plant is not even good "pop bonsai" nor "Mom bonsai". This plant can not even be classified as "mame bonsai".
The word bonsai here has actually been stretched to the limit and probably broken. What you have here is not bonsai. It is a seedling in a pot, shaped into a grotesque shape, with absolutely no artistic ability, and horticulturally will possibly kill the plant due to taking away the apical tendency of the seedling.
I would suggest studying as many bonsai publications you can find and study the measure of the word "bonsai." I think you will find that your creations stand alone, and with good reason....
