You are absolutely right, most trees when hard pruned will amaze you with the growth that they shoot right back at you!~
My biggest concern was the fact that the trunk kept going to the right towards the actual broom. I kept the lower branch in the virt becuase the 2 different amounts of foliage on either side will create the illusion (I HOPE) that the trunk is tapering.

Anyways, hardpruning is a great suggestion!

I did hardpruning on my serissa and got lots of new buds even from the trunk .And serissa is a natural backbudder as long as kept healthy.I really like the virtual and that's the way i would go with it aswell. Watch out for wiring, i wouldn't suggest normal copper/aluminum wire, instead use string(the one used for sewing/sowing clothes can't remeber the correct word). Serissa's break thin branches very easy,
