Porcy: Its not the temprature under the snow that is the problem, Generally if it snows hard enough to cover your trees completly you will be ok! Its the temprature above the snow that will kill an unprotected plant. If you pile straw or mulch around and over your pots so that they will not freeze and then let snow cover the tops of your trees. In japan they will put there trees under there benches cover the pots with straw and then wall them off with snow for the winter. Remember servival 101 if you are caught out and unprotected dig a snow cave and seal yourself up. The temprature will not fall below 32degrees. The same temprature as the snow around you.
