Sure lots 'o people grow super-minis and enjoy it. We have a women in our club who does a display of seven trees on a stand about 6 inches high.
Some ideas for starting out ...Try
1. Small succulents, sempervivium and sedums
2. drop a seed in them and grow the seedling
3. divide a miniture grass (Acorus,armeria) and plant a plug.
4. Try a dandelion from the lawn. They will produce a trunk in time.
5. Any super small cutting of easy to grow herb (Thyme,germander,rosemary,etc.

Get used to these easy things to grow while you look for tiny cuttings of more typical bonsai stock. G'luck
