Yes the wirst winter is always a big problem. There is things in your mind like "do I have enough winter protection", etc.

At mine first I lost about 70% of mine trees. Now after mine second winter all of them survived and I am very happy. Just remember at give enough water for the trees so the soil will be melted and it can feed itself. I presume that you have real winters Buffalo (with real I mean at least temperature under -15C (5F)). The reason of mine losts was the frozen soil.
