Hi Arlene, I'm guessing you are asking about 'moss' as the green on the top of the soil. I have heard differing opinions as to the use of moss on the top. Most agree it is a show thing, and some feel it is only a show thing. It will make watering more difficult and will promote 'wet feet' in your tree. That said it does look real nice and a piece or two makeing up 25-40% of the soil cover is probably OK. I prefer to keep my trees moss free, but they are not show quality and I am a novice who does not need to make my watering habits more difficult.
