Group #1 - This is a selection from the series of photos that were broadcast in real time from our bonsai webcam.
(Note: UL=upper left UR=upper right LL=lower Left LR=Lower right)
UL: The tree before any work. That's a soda can resting on the crate in the center of the trunk for scale. I had been considering this repotting project for quite some time. When the crate made it clear it wasn't going to last another year, it became a reality. I'm really glad we developed the bonsaicam so that this could be shared with the world!
UR: Trying to tap the crate apart gently after removing the wire. Turns out it was screwed together. Those screws don't turn after 10 years exposure!
LL: Cutting the crate open with a SawZall that Kathy bought for me for Christmas. This was the first time I'd used it and I see why they are so popular. It took just a couple minutes to cut the box apart with this wood blade.
LR: Last bit of the box being cut away. The roots look healthy and I am very relieved that the majority of the root system points to the right (which will be downward when the tree is repotted). I had been concerned about finding a big root going the wrong way.
