I know what you mean. I lived in the SF Bay area for about 10 yrs across the street from a 90 yr old gentleman with a 1-acre, who had been developing his back yard as a Japanese garden since the 50's. It was remarkable. Koi ponds, lath house for his trees, beautiful maples and pines, classic Budhist statues, etc. We became good friends; actually, he got me started with bonsai. But he passed away and the house was bought from the estate by a developer who ripped out the garder, subdivided the lot and built a 2nd house in back. There were other travesties, too, but that was the worst. It reminded me again of how temporary material things are. Oh well....
