Maybe you could get your hands on some raffia to wrap the branches and then put that copper wire to work for you and create some movement in the branches - then as you chase back the foliage into the interior you can get some nice twisted shapes.

I think that will help create scale and not make it look so much like a shrub that got tipped over.
