Ants in the branches means you have a more destructive pest like scale or aphids being tended by the ants, or perhaps you live in a flood zone? Contrary to popular opinion, the ants aren't sunning themselves up there!

Take a pocket magnifier, and look at the undersides of the leaves and developing buds for the tiny green, black or crimson bodies of the aphids (may be winged or un-winged). Scale develops along the branches there is some info in the ***FAQ*** on both subjects (look under PESTS) with good scale photos.
